The sum of two numbers is 50 and their difference is 20,find the numbers.Then define the variablers. So, let x be the 1st #,y be the 2nd #. Then identify the equations.

x+y = 50
x-y = 20 (cancel the y's)

2x/2 = 7o/2
x = 35


x+y = 50 ( substitute the x with 35 )
35+y = 50 ( transpose 35 to the other side)
y = 50-35
y = 15

therefor, the numbers are 35 and 15.
